Creating a gorgeous garden office

With increased numbers of us working from home since the pandemic, garden offices are becoming really common. Create a working from home dream with your very own space, away from the house but commute free. A spot at the bottom of the garden is just the place if you’re looking for somewhere you can really focus, away from distractions. Plus you’ll enjoy the wellbeing benefits gained from being closely surrounded by nature.

We’re just about to embark on a garden office installation in our new home. So I wanted to share learnings so far, along with some design tips to make the space look superb.

Shop around. You’ll save money if you use a company who don’t have big fancy showrooms - this will save them money, and those savings will be passed onto the customer.

Ask about heating, make sure it’s insulated. Make sure you’ve got plenty of light coming in too - consider a roof lantern.

Make it look as if it’s always been there with plenty of plants growing up and around the new external walls. Think about creating a path through the garden to take you to it from the house.

Bring the outside in with plenty of plants and some green in your colour scheme. Green is a soothing shade, which can also be quite motivational, whilst linking beautifully to nature.

Choose your desk carefully. think about how much space you need - do you need lots of storage for paperwork. Do you need space for multiple desktops, or for sketching? Where you position it is also key - give yourself as much natural light as possible. Invest in a comfortable, well structured chair, and you might want to give yourself the option of having a standing desk area too.

Create an area in which to relax as well as work - a comfy sofa or armchair, with a TV perhaps.

Make it feel homely and cosy with rugs, cushions and blinds or curtains to soften the space.

Consider built in storage units which make the most use of the space, and hide all the clutter.
