Looking to achieve a slice of ‘quiet luxury’ at home? Here's how.
Quiet luxury is the latest hot trend sweeping the fashion headlines. From Gwyneth Paltrow to Victoria Beckham, everyone’s at it.
It struck a chord with me from an interiors perspective as I’ve been working on a few projects recently which are all about creating an ultra calm, elegant, luxurious space. No clutter, no busyness, just plain neutrals. Just like the fashion trend, it’s all about the quality of the materials. Timeless, quality pieces which look expensive but aren’t shouty and in your face.
The reason I love this minimal, clean, classy look is it exudes absolute serenity. A feeling of tranquility that we all crave, don’t we, to counter balance our hectic, noisy, chaotic daily lives? An oasis of zen. A space we can go to decompress at the end of a stressful day.
Here are my top tips on how to achieve the ‘quiet luxury’ look in your home.
Stick to a neutral palette. Whites, creams, off whites, oatmeal, greys, taupe, beige, black. Any colour you do introduce should be minimal and subtle, and just pick one. A sage green, navy or dusky rose grey.
Use natural materials. Terracotta or limestone tiles are both lovely. Washed oak is gorgeous.
Pick hardware which looks as natural as possible. Go for antique brass rather than ultra shiny yellow gold. Dark nickel, aged copper or bronze are also great.
To create a neutral look effectively without it falling flat, you need plenty of texture. Fluted tiles or textured but plain wallpaper for example. Light will bounce off the bumps and curves of a surface, creating highlights and shadows, preventing the space from feeling one dimensional.
Mix in a wide variety of materials. Linen is lovely and expensive looking. Velvet is gorgeous and warm. Faux fur, light cotton, a hint of leather to create a layered look which is warm and homely whilst remaining clean and fresh.
Use one tone of paint throughout. Let the walls act as a backdrop and draw the eye towards stunning artwork, beautiful furniture and architectural details.
