Let's think gorgeously homely vibes this Autumn. Check out my tips to help you create your living space of dreams..
As we ease into Autumn, it feels relevant to talk about the cosy spaces in our home. And during the colder months you’ll be needing a snug space to retreat to in the evenings. Here is some guidance for anyone updating their lounge.
Get the layout right. You need to think carefully about your furniture choices and positioning. How many people do you need to comfortably seat? Have social situations front of mind when you're grouping furniture. Don’t space seating too far apart. You want to encourage conversation and a create a welcoming, homely feel.
Think about your cuppa! Always make sure there’s a coffee table or an ottoman in front of the sofa, and consider side tables too, so there’s plenty of space to pop drinks onto. If you’ve got an L shaped sofa or a corner, a round coffee table or ottoman will create balance next to the straight lines of the sofa. A rectangular or square table will do the same in front of a two or three seater standard sofa.
Think socially. Don’t leave big gaps between the sofas, chairs and coffee tables/ ottomans. Again this is about creating a cosy feel, and remember, comfort is key. You don’t want to be reaching for miles to grab your drink from the sofa. Equally, don't push your sofa right up against the walls. Bringing it into the room a few inches will add to the snug feel.
Go as big as you can afford with your rug. The front legs of your sofas and chairs should sit on top of the rug, to pull them into the space and bring it all together. You want to avoid a small floating rug which looks isolated from all the furniture.
Lighting is key to creating warmth. Position your lights at different levels across the room. Wall lights mixed with table lamps and floor lamps will give you a lovely range of levels. Avoid table lamps at eye level when you’re seated, go for something slightly lower, and with a shade which does a good job of shielding the bare bulb from your eyes.
Pick warm shades such as pinks, browns, reds and greens, rather than cool colours. Pattern and texture warms up the room too, so wallpaper is a great way to introduce this. You can be as outrageous or subtle as you like here! Go for full length curtains if you can, for maximum opulence, and plenty of throws and cushions for ultra cosy vibes.
