Introducing the fifth wall... why the ceiling can't be overlooked

One of my biggest home design frustrations is the tendency to leave the ceiling white. Why oh why? Please no more plain ceilings! I am on a mission to banish boring white ceilings and bring more colour, pattern and texture to the fifth wall.

The ceiling should be a considered element of your room design. Unless white is a key colour in your scheme you need to ditch it.

If your ceilings aren’t particularly high it’s a great idea to carry the wall colour up onto the ceiling, as this banishes the line between the walls and the ceiling, giving an illusion of more height.

Or painting your ceiling a shade lighter than the wall colour is a great shout if you want to make the room feel lighter.

How about some fancy wallpaper. Adds an element of wow plus it’s a great way to bring some pattern into the space without it being too full on.

Exposed beams or moulding on the ceiling is a lovely way to add character. Ornate ceiling roses are worth adding or even painting another colour to make them stand out in more traditional homes too. Just make sure whatever you do is in keeping with the style of your home. There are some fab modern style options out there so this is doable even in a new build.

Go gold! Crown do a fabulous gold paint and it adds a warm and luxurious feeling to any space.

Have fun with it. The ceiling is less conspicuous than the walls so it’s a less intrusive way to go a bit bold, plus it adds a truly surprising element to your design.
